The 826 Boston Moustache-A-Thon is a city-wide contest of patience, sweat, and swagger. Over 70 brave participants will refuse to shave their upper lips for the next six weeks. Why risk job loss and public ridicule, you ask? These folks are sprouting whiskers in support of 826 Boston’s free youth writing and tutoring programs for students ages 6-18.

Help support them, and 826 Boston, by making a donation of any size to your favorite grower.

This year, our goal is to raise $15,000 in support of 826 Boston and we’ve challenged each moustache grower to raise at least $300.

Located in Roxbury’s Egleston Square, 826 Boston teaches creative and expository writing to students age 6 to 18, and helps teachers inspire their students to write. In 2009, 826 Boston published student writing in The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and in numerous books like 2% of 2% of All the World’s Stories. This year 826 Boston’s free writing and tutoring programs will reach over 2,000 students and provide more than 7,500 hours of one-on-one support. Please help support 826 Boston’s growing community of young writers.

A Moustache Sonnet

Earlier this week, during our Sonnets with Superpowers writing workshop, students Sarah and Kamal found themselves inspired by our Moustache-a-thon and wrote this glittering 13-line sonnet. Portraiture shows that the Bard himself was fond of the moustache. We think he’d be quite smitten by this follicularly inspired gem.

Shall I compare thee to a Bigfoot?
Thou art less hairy and more civilized.
A rose by any other name would be more long
but not as long as you, Moustache-a-thon.

Guido, I wish that you and Brittani and I
and Ali, Tahni, Nick and Karen too
were on a boat made out of hair product,
a wax repellent to all storms.

Then if it snowed or rained or sniffled even
we’d be safe, and our moustaches, in this haven.

I would crash the party with a five foot moustache
The paparazzi had a lot of flashes when I arrived
When I played tag I stashed myself somewhere

The 2010 Moustache-A-thon kicked off in grand fashion on Monday with our awe-inspiring Opening Ceremonies. The evening featured a cape-lighting ceremony, moustache-inspired aerobics, and dancing. The Inaugural Peach Fuzz Cup was awarded to Nicholas for raising a remarkable $710.00 before the night’s end.

Nick’s Fundraising Total:$930.00

Nick volunteers each week at Saturday tutoring and is a member of 826 Boston’s Volunteer Writers’ Group. Bravo, Nick!
